Enforcement and Confidentiality
IBGE's operational ground are the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the Code of Good Practices for Statistics that guarantee statistical independence and data confidentiality.
By correctly answering the 2022 Census, the great winner is you. Law No. 5,534, of November 14, 1968, which establishes the mandatory provision of statistical information, ensures the confidentiality of the information collected:
Article 1 - Every natural or legal person under public or private law who is under the jurisdiction of Brazilian law must provide the information requested by the IBGE Foundation for the execution of the National Statistics Plan (Decree-Law no. 161, of February 13, 1967, Art. 2, § 2).
Sole Paragraph - The information provided shall be confidential, used exclusively for statistical purposes and shall not be the object of a certificate, nor, under any circumstances, shall it serve as evidence in tax or judicial administrative proceedings, except for infractions against the provisions of present law.
According to this law, the answers given to the 2022 Census questionnaire are absolutely confidential and will be used exclusively in the preparation of statistical records and series. You can rely on that.
The confidentiality of the responses will be stressed by the enumerator before he/she starts the interviews. Under no circumstances will the information provided be seen by people outside the census service. Whoever breaches census secrecy is punished with summary dismissal and subject to criminal prosecution.
Everyone should cooperate so that we can obtain reliable data. They are the indispensable for a well succeeded census and, consequently, for a better country, more and more adequate to its people.
