The Brazilian Census adopts the concept of resident or “de jure” population, that is, the population is enumerated where they reside. All the residents of private and collective housing units are counted, on the date of reference.

Other persons enumerated are those absent from the housing unit due to a trip, studies, work, or hospitalization, for a period of less than 12 months.

The reference date for the investigation of characteristics of housing units and of resident persons is midnight between July 31st and August 1st, 2022. Therefore, according to this criteria, persons born after this date are excluded from the Census, since they are not part of the group of residents in the housing unit on the data of reference. Persons who died after this date will be included, however, because they were residents of the housing unit on the date of reference.
