Juarez Caznok, enumerator, at collection

At the age of 67 and retired, enumerator Juarez Caznok has adminstered more than 800 questionnaires and enumerated more than 2,000 persons. He now is working in his sixth enumerationa area in the capital of Paraná. For him, the Population Census has become an opportunity to do something he likes: explore the region, meet people and even make friends. “I act like I'm from the neighborhood. If a person looks at me with suspicion, you need to make them feel important and explain that the census is also important to them. All of a sudden, the person comes near you and opens up”, says Mr. Caznok.

In his opinion, it is important for enumerators to have good interpersonal skills, being friendly and communicative. In condominiums and apartment buildings, it is important to talk to the landlord or doorman, to facilitate communication with the residents. At the end of the day, for him, “smiling is fundamental, the approach needs to be friendly”. He continues: “enumerators needs to perceive the person's fears, take them away calmly and by means of information, and value respondents' participation”. He continues, highlighting that “it is important to calmly explain what the census is: a portrait of the country”.

About what he has found during the census, Mr. Caznok notes that there are many elderly women living alone in Curitiba. “Old men, in general, do not live alone. As for women, I see many of them living alone.” Since the beginning of the Census, Mr. Caznok has also noticed a change in people's attitude in the streets. “Now people greet me, say good morning. They come to ask me how the Census is doing. But this one [the vest] helps a lot, you have to wear it with pride”, he explains, showing the IBGE vest.
