The finalists of the 2022 Population Census Photograph Award are shown in Salvador (BA), in an open exhibition between July 17 and 23 at the Pituaçu subway station, supported by CCR Metrô Bahia.

The Census is the widest and most detailed picture of Brazil, but not exclusively due to the statistics it produces. During the data collection of the survey, between August 1, 2022 and February 28, 2023, Brazil had its reality and diversity literally photographed by nearly 6,400 enumerators.

They registered landscapes in the cities and in the country, as well as different types of houses in the four corners of the national territory. The pictures unveil Brazil through the eye of those who lived and closely saw the challenges, learnings and beauties of a census operation.

The exhibition gathers 164 pictures pre-selected by IBGE workers in the entire country, of a total of 17,700 sent along the Census. They were made with the same equipment used in the survey´s interviews, the Data Collection Mobile Devices (DMCs), and compete in three categories: Urban Landscapes, Rural Landscapes and Housing.

Each Brazilian state has at least two finalists by category, and the winners will be selected by the public. Those visiting the exhibition can vote in their preferred images by means of a QR Code.

The authors of the three most voted pictures in each category will earn prizes in cash: R$5,000 for the first position; R$3,000 for the second position; and R$1,000 for the third position. The winners will be known in September.

The 2022 Census Photograph Award exhibition also counts with a digital version, which can be visited on https://censo2022.ibge.gov.br/concursofotos. It is also possible to vote in the preferred images on the site.

Exhibition will have special section dedicated to Census pictures in traditional peoples and communities in Bahia

Besides the images that compete for the Photograph Award, the exhibition in the Pituaçu station will have a special section, not competitive, dedicated to pictures taken by IBGE teams in Bahia during the enumeration of traditional peoples and communities (PCT) in the state.

Called “Involve to Develop”, the parallel exhibition brings 11 images of pre-data collection meetings and of the data collection in indigenous and quilombola communities in Bahia.

Conceived by Camila Evaristo, a PCT analyst in the IBGE Superintendence in Bahia, the project aims at celebrating these important population groups in the state and that had a specific treatment in the 2022 Census.
