Last Sunday, the IBGE State Superintendence in Rio de Janeiro and the Center for Documentation and Information Dissemination (CDDI) sponsored another action to disseminate the Population Census at Leblon Beach, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The event took a stretch of the boardwalk of Delfim Moreira Avenue, by the Allah Garden. A predominantly high-income neighborhood, it registers a lot of refusals in the operation in Rio de Janeiro.

Cimar Azeredo, Acting President of the IBGE, directors and servants of the state unit, headed by the Operational Coordinator of the Census in Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Barros, were present in the face-to-face contact with residents and tourists who strolled in the boardwalk. Hundreds of persons have been approached in order to inform whether they have already answered the Census. In the case of a negative answer, they were encouraged to leave their names and telephones to schedule the interviews.

Like the event of October 8 in shopping malls of several Brazilian capitals and cities, the responsiveness of the public to that effort of direct contact was, once gain, very positive - even couples and families who had already received the enumerators insisted on supporting the work of the IBGE. Explanatory leaflets about the importance of the Census have been distributed, as well as popsicles and ice water.

In that place, Cimar Azeredo gave Globo TV another round of interviews to stories in their TV news. He talked about the end of the data collection this Tuesday (28), explained how the calculation phase will take place in March - for which enumerators and supervisors will still return to the field - and confirmed that the first results of the Census might be available by the end of April.

Almost a zero-cost action, the event at Leblon Beach turned up a highly productive action in terms of direct exposure with the public and media visibility on behalf of the census operation.
