In partnership with Cufa (Central Única das Favelas), the IBGE carried out this Tuesday, 02/14, in Heliópolis, São Paulo, another initiative to publicize the 2022 Census. The event was attended by the president of Cufa, Marcivan Barreto; the acting president of the IBGE, Cimar Azeredo; the superintendent of the Institute in the state, Francisco Garrido; and teams of civil servants involved in the operation. A tent was set up in the middle of the street, in front of the headquarters of the Central, to schedule interviews with the residents of Heliópolis. There, refusal rates added to the rate of absent residents are around 20%. The joint effort between Cufa and the IBGE aims to change this situation before the end of data collection, on February 28th.

“This is a very important partnership because it combined the need for the survey, the IBGE servants and the local people who know the territory”, said Mr. Barreto. “When you don’t answer the Census, you become invisible, you cannot attract public policies to your community”, added Cufa’s leader.

“The interview is very fast, and you can be sure and positive that nobody has access to whatever you put in this equipment”, explained Mr. Azeredo, about the DMC, collection mobile device, used by the enumerators, and about the secrecy and safety of the operation.

The IBGE superintendent in São Paulo also highlighted the data protection issue. “Proceeding with the census activities, we have implemented this interactive initiative with the residents of Heliópolis, to carry out the data collection in a safe way and with secrecy”, assured Mr. Garrido.
