The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) conducted, between Thursday (19) and Monday (23) the first step of a quality scrutiny of the population coverage in the 2022 Population Census in the municipality of Tartarugalzinho, in the north of Amapá.

The measure implemented by the State Superintendence of Amapá (SES/AP) goes on until January 30th and it is intended to revise enumeration areas with a high number of vacant housing units and to check which housing units have not been enumerated. In this first step, about 1,5 thousand persons more have been enumerated.

According to the superintendent of SES/AP, Haroldo Ferreira, the scrutiny resulted from the need of ensuring better population coverage in Tartarugalzinho.

“The IBGE team collected data where it detected non-enumerated housing units and will come back to Tartarugalzinho to finish this step and later find housing units on the other side of the city that may have been out of the Census as well,” he adds.

Also, the scrutiny was the topic discussed in a meeting on Tuesday (24) between the superintendent of SES/AP and the mayor of Tartarugalzinho, Bruno Mineiro, in order to deal with the review of this 1st step. Carlos Sampaio Duarte, president of the Association of Municipalities in the state of Amapá (Ameap), also attended the meeting, by telephone.

A new meeting was arranged for a future occasion, then including all mayors. That will be an opportunity for the IBGE to provide information about quality checking of the 2022 census data collection coverage and go on with the necessary procedures regarding supervision.

The training coordinator for the 2022 Census in Amapá, Valdiney Melo, highlighted that the action is intended to make more accurate data about the municipalities in Amapá presented in the 2022 Population Census.

“That was not a very relevant change regarding the increase of municipal population. There were about 100 housing units classified as vacant but that were inhabited, as we observed. In such a huge operation this additional verification step is always necessary,” said the coordinator.

The team sent by SES/AP to the municipality of Tartarugalzinho counted on two state coordinators, a census supervisor from Macapá and three survey and mapping agents from the Macapá branch.

During the work, the Municipal Government of Tartarugalzinho provided lodging, food and transportation for the IBGE team.
