Data collection for the 2022 Census in Pernambuco advances with the start of census activities in the Curado Prison Complex, the main one in the state, which belongs to the Recife I area. The complex has three prison facilities: Juiz Antônio Luís Lins de Barros Prison, Aspirante Marcelo Francisco Araújo Prison (PAM) and Frei Damião de Bozzano Prison. Data collection has been possible due to a joint effort, and counts on one enumerator per establishment.

Enumerator Gabriel Souza started his work at PAM on October 13 and has been collection information from 1,800 convicts by means of administrative records. For security purposes, the servant has no contact with the prisoners. "I confess I was a little afraid in the beginning, but we were welcomed by the prison’s directors and staff. That’s a new experience, I can even say I’m enjoying it. Work is easy because the records are very well organized."

This is the fifth enumeration area covered by Gabriel, whose four previous ones were located in neighborhoods and subnormal clusters close to the Curado Prsion Complex, in western Recife. According to the enumerator, the Census has a dimension that goes way beyond a population count. “Many people think we go from door to door just to know how many people live in Brazilian homes, but we produce a real portrait of the population.”

Prisons are classified as Collective Housing Units with Residents (DCCM, in Portuguese), which encompasses dwelling places where residents are subject to administrative rules. The manager of PAM, Fabiano Augustus Azevedo, responsible for accompanying the enumerator, paid a compliment to IBGE’s initiative. "It is important not to leave anyone behind in this count, including those who are imprisoned."
