The Superintendence of the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) in Mato Grosso finished collecting data for the 2022 Population Census in five of the 141 municipalities, from August 1 to October 31: Araguainha, Ponte Branca, Ribeirãozinho, Araguaiana and Nova Santa Helen. Araguainha was the first city to complete the work, in its eight enumeration areas (territorial unit established for cadastral control purposes – with a number of households that allow a survey by an enumerator), on October 17th.
Enumerator Divani Rosa da Silva visited the housheolds of one enumeration area, resigned and Kethlyn Rodrigues de Almeida, after being hired and trained, was responsible for the census of the other seven areas. The old city hall building of the Municipality of Araguainha, downtown, housed the Census collection post, which was managed by ACM (Municipal Census Agent) Mayara Francisca de Souza and by ACS (Census Supervisory Agent) Letícia Elisa de Oliveira Furquim. The city is part of the Alto Araguaia area.
Two days later, on October 19, Ponte Branca, also in the Alto Araguaia region, was the second municipality in Mato Grosso to achieve the goal of enumerating its six enumeration areas. The city had two enumerators, Michael Jullian Ferreira Gonçalves Almeida and Ana Carolina Fagundes Nogueira, and ACM Roselene Ferreira de Almeida.
According to the 2021 Population Estimate, Araguainha and Ponte Branca were the two smallest cities in Mato Grosso in terms of population, with 909 and 1,525 inhabitants, respectively. The data collected in the 2022 Census is still undergoing quality supervision and should be released on a preliminary basis in the last week of December.
On October 25, it was time to finish data collection in the 14 areas of Ribeirãozinho, also in the Alto Araguaia area. ACM Alan Rodrigues Vieira and census takers Marandeza Gomes Ribeiro, Tania Maria Pereira Ramalho and Amanda Bento Rosa worked in the city, which, according to the 2021 Estimapop, had 2,439 residents. Enumerator Ana Carolina Fagundes Nogueira, from Ponte Branca, also participated in the collection of two rural areas in Ribeirãozinho, after completing the work in her municipality. And now she is already participating in the census in Torixoréu.
For the head of the Alto Araguaia agency, Wanderley Sebastião da Silva Fraga, area coordinator for the three completed municipalities, the efficient collection of the Census in Araguainha is due to the fact it is a smaller municipality and to the good work of enumerator Kethlyn Rodrigues de Almeida. “We had support from the city hall, mainly in terms of transport at the beginning of the collection, then we finished with a vehicle from our fleet”, she said.
Overall, according to Mr. Fraga, the operation was well received by residents. “At the beginning of the Census, few people were aware of the collection, but over time, they became more aware”, he says.
Collection also came to an end in the 25 enumeration areas of Araguaiana, in the region of Barra do Garças, and in the 13 areas of Nova Santa Helena, in the area of Sorriso. The 2022 Census is expected to continue throughout Brazil until mid-December. All households in the country will be visited.
Mato Grosso has enumerated 1.5 million residents up to October
Across the state, from August 1st to October 31st, the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) managed to register 1,523,771 residents in 518,154 households, of which 763,804 were women and 759,967 were men. This is the result of the third report of the 2022 Population Census, which represents the data collection of 42.72% of the estimated population for the year 2021.
Across the country, in the same period, 136,022,192 people were registered in 47,740,071 households, which corresponds to 63.77% of the estimated population last year. Of those residents who have already been counted in the Census, 70,310,113 were women and 65,712,079 were men.
On the 2022 Census hotsite you can follow the daily account of the total enumerated population in the country and the evolution of areas worked by Federation Unit.
The majority (99.45%) of the questionnaires in Mato Grosso were answered in person: in 515,318 of the 518,154 registered households. Another 1,108 residents responded online and 1,728 by phone.
Altogether, 451,102 households answered the basic questionnaire, which has 26 questions and investigates the main characteristics of the household and its residents. The other 71,072 households answered the sample questionnaire, which has 77 questions and includes, in addition to the questions present in the basic questionnaire, other more detailed ones, as well as specific topics: characteristics of the households, ethnic-racial identification, marriage, family nucleus, fertility, religion or cult, disability, internal or international migration, education, commuting to study, labor and income, commuting to work, mortality and autism.
According to the third collection report, 4,830 of the 9,082 census sectors in Mato Grosso have already been worked on, which represents 53.18% of the total. When analyzing the census sector criterion, Sergipe (95.21%), Piauí (94.73%) and Rio Grande do Norte (94.36%) are the states with the most advanced collection, and Mato Grosso (53.18 %), Roraima (65.10%) and Acre (66.47%) are the ones that are most behind.
Regarding the enumerated population, the Federation Units which are ahead are, respectively, Piauí (86.08%), Sergipe (83.19%) and Rio Grande do Norte (80.48%), while Mato Grosso (42.72 %), Amapá (51.47%) and Acre (54.07%) are falling behind.
According to the collection report, 2.90% of Mato Grosso households refused to answer the Census, a percentage lower than the 3.72% of the Continuous PNAD (Continuous National Household Sample Survey) in the second quarter of this year. In Brazil, the Census refusal rate is 2.33%, below the 2.99% of the Continuous PNAD, but which is expected to be reduced by the end of the operation, after all insistence protocols have been applied.
Mato Grosso had, on October 27, 1,284 enumerators hired, of which 1,150 were working between October 17 and 23. Initially, however, the state had 3,103 enumerator positions to be filled. So, with a percentage of 37.1% of active enumerators in relation to the number of positions, the state has the biggest deficit of enumerators. Piauí already has 64% of the positions filled.
For the IBGE Superintendent in Mato Grosso, Millane Chaves, it is important to highlight that the state has the second lowest unemployment rate in the country (4.4%) ---the first is Santa Catarina (3.9%)--, in addition to having a higher average income than the average for Brazil.
“Therefore, we have low unemployment, which translates into a large supply of vacant jobs and good remuneration (mainly in Agribusiness), which makes it difficult for us to attract people to temporary work to carry out the Census in Mato Grosso compared to other states of the federation”, she explains.
To solve this problem, the IBGE periodically releases public notices for faster complementary selection processes, an administrative routine provided for in all Censuses.
