In order to reverse refusals and solve the lack of feedback after the visits when residents are absent from the housing unit, servants from the IBGE State Superintendence in Paraíba conducted a series of iniatives to promote the 2022 Population Census between the end of September and throughout the first two weeks of October. The awareness raising initiatives took place mainly in the capital of the state.

The first initiative was held at the Bus Connection Terminal and at Sólon de Lucena Park, also called Lagoa, located downtown, from 6:45 am to 8:30 pm on October 7th. Servants from the João Pessoa I branch helped hand out leaflets in these places and put up flyers in all the terminal stations.

Leaflets were distributed at different times and locations, in order to reach a bigger audience

According to Jorge Alves, census dissemination coordinator in the state of Paraíba, the strategy was aimed at reaching an audience from different parts of the city. “Hundreds of residents, from practically all neighborhoods, go from and to these places every day. By choosing these specific hours our reach is even bigger and we hope to remind the population that the Census is in the field and that it is necessary to part in the survey. We also have 10 buses with census stickers announcing the operation in the capital, and that reinforces our message.”

On Thursday (13), late in the afternoon, the same action took place in the shore of Tambaú and Cabo Branco, supported by servants from the João Pessoa II branch. That is the moment when the beach sidewalk welcomes, besides tourists, residents in search of place for doing physical activities of simply stroll. These neighborhoods are considered sophisticated areas in the city and have been challenging for the enumerators.

Another measure adopted by the Superintendence was the partnership with teaching institutions. Between October 11 and 25, a team of servants visited a number of teaching institutions. In some cases, they handed out Census leaflets among high school students, whereas in others they scheduled visits by the IBGE in classrooms.

Besides the Federal Institute of Paraíba (IFPB), the action was conducted mainly in schools located in areas where the enumerators have faced most difficulties. Flyers were also distributed in private universities in the capital.

Pombal subarea promotes lectures to high school students

On September 14 and 22, coordinators of Pombal subarea, in the inland area of the state, promoted lectures to high school students. The presentations took place at the Arruda Câmara State Primary and High School and the Menino Jesus School, respectively.

Lectures were positively evaluated by teachers and students

The explanation was focused on the differences between the Population Census and sample surveys, the methodology used, the types of questionnaire and the importance of the information obtained.

“I mentioned all the topics approached in the questionnaires and the necessity of each one of these as part of the Census. Near the end of the lecture, I spoke about the portal IBGEeduca, showing how to access it and what type of content is available for educational purposes. The event was very participative, and the groups reported their experiences with the enumerators. They asked a lot of questions, reported being curious about the Census and mentioned the importance of the survey for the country,” said João Paulo Santana, head of one of the subareas.

Professor Alenilson Nobre, who received the IBGE in one of the classes, said the lecture changed a concept of the IBGE that many had in mind. Professor Mônica Oliveira highlighted that the meeting was very fruitful. “Information was clear and accurate, and we discussed many topics approached in the classroom, regarding the importance of the Institute for the country, such as matters related to the reality of the Brazilian population.”
