Enumerators in ES tell secret of high productivity

Persistence, organization, empathy, education, resiliency, availability and easiness to deal with the public are some characteristics of the enumerators who stand out in terms of productivity in the 2022 Census. They do not give up easily and they are focused on the objective of meeting residents at home and concluding enumeration areas.
Among the enumerators who mostly produced in the state, 27-year old Alexandro Galeno is collecting the seventh enumeration area and 47-year old Michele Bragança, the sixth enumeration area. Both of them cover the municipality of Serra, yet the coincidences are even more.
They have in common a strategic planning to meet the goals they scheduled along the day. Galeno and Bragança cover their enumeration areas either on foot or by bicycle and they aim at doing a minimum of 20 questionnaires per day. The enumerators have already done 34 questionnaires in a day in the most favorable moments.
“I work from Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, and I visit the pending households on Saturdays. Saturday is the day that we meet the persons who work during the week,” states Bragança.
Galeno also established a work schedule to do the interviews. “I work from Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 6 PM, and, on weekends, I return to the houses that I did not find residents during the week,” explains him.
Motivation. If their initial motivation to work in the Census was the financial contribution, along the Census they not only accrued money, but also different stories and experiences. “I am graduated in Journalism and I like to talk with people. I like to hear stories and to know different realities. For instance, in the Nova Almeida Residential Park, which is a place far from the center of Serra, I found residents glad to know that the Census arrived in that region, which moved me. They are ranches where water comes from wells and garbage is dumped, because they do not have any collection. They are different realities for us to know and for the Census to show,” believes Galeno.
For Bragança, who is a Human Resources manager, dealing with people was the easiest part of the work. “Contacting people was always my area and the Census shows us different realities we need to portray,” says her.
According to Galeno, it is possible to earn more than one thousand reais per week, yet it is necessary to stick to the work routine. “Those who strive manage to close the enumeration area in 15 days on average,” adds Bragança.
The enumerators also give tips for those who are beginning their work. “Do not go only four times to the household, as planned in cases of empty households. Go more times, persist. Bad days, refusals and closed doors should not discourage you,” advises Galeno.
On the other hand, Bragança talks about an extremely important matter for the Census. “Be ethical. Collect the data of the visited houses correctly, since they will portray the country that we live in,” concludes her.
Friendliness is one of the strategies of the Census champions
Another productivity champion, now in the municipality of Vila Velha, is the 27-year old enumerator Philipe Assis, who is collecting the Census since August. He completed seven enumeration areas, with 3,638 people enumerated and an average of 21 questionnaires filled per day. In the baggage, he takes education, friendliness and attention to approach the residents. “I did not have any problem with residents since I began to work in the Census and I have always been received well. I did not have any problems with the compensation as well,” highlights him.
The bonus that the IBGE implemented in October for those who reach a certain number of questionnaires filled made the production even more positive. “With the incentive of the bonus, I began to outperform,” assures Assis.
Assis works from 9 AM to 11:30 AM and from 1 PM to 6 PM during the week and, in the weekends, he works on Saturdays in the morning and on Sundays he does the scheduled interviews. “I worked as a salesman in my last job and it helped me to be friendly when meeting people. I always talk about the importance of Census and the residents are very responsive,” says him.
And, for those who think the work is tiring, an enumerator from Colatina, 52-year old Irene Caciano da Silva, masters it. She manages to have free Saturdays. On the other hand, she works on Sundays and holidays, when it is easier to find residents at home. “There is not a secrecy for high productivity; indeed, the secrecy is simple. It is willingness and leaving for work,” emphasizes her. With this dedication, she has already enumerated 1,951 households and 3,980 people in 18 completed enumeration areas, and 29 questionnaires filled per day on average.
As she had already attended the public, she uses sympathy and friendliness to approach the residents of Fioravante Marino, a neighborhood of Colatina. “That place is very quiet and the residents are kind. I do not have any difficulty to close enumeration areas here,” says her.
Silva highlights that the IBGE training was key to empower her as an enumerator. “I use the IBGE tools to streamline my work. When I do not find the residents, I leave a message and they return the contact. I love to work with people, I love all this and I feel well with my work,” states her.
Therefore, every enumerator has in common the easiness to deal with the public, the taste for knowing new realities and the willingness to work being points that assure a high productivity and a fair profitability.
Among the most productive enumerators in the state, some of them earned 12 thousand reais and others, 10 thousand reais, in the first two months of data collection. With the bonus in October, some of them earned nearly five thousand reais only until October 20.
