The IBGE released this Thursday (17) the data of the 2022 Census Homologation Test, carried out in Jardim Estalagem, in Viamão. In November last year, IBGE agents went to all the households in that locality to improve the operation of the Population Census, which will begin in August 2022. Equipment, data collection systems, questionnaires, training process, capture of GPS coordinates and approach to the population in regional contexts were assessed.

The release of the results was held at the City Council of Viamão, with the presence of the mayor, Valdir Bonatto, and of the president of the Legislative, Igor Bernardes, among other city councilors, like Markinhos da Estalagem, who lives in the locality enumerated. José Renato Braga de Almeida, head of the State Unit, and Luís Eduardo Puchalski, Census operational coordinator in RS, represented the IBGE.

“I would like to express my satisfaction for being here releasing the results of the Census Homologation Test. I thank the mayor for the support received since the beginning of the operation, the president of the Chamber for hosting us here today, the IBGE professionals involved in the test, and a special gratitude to the population of Jardim Estalagem for understanding our work,” stated the head of the IBGE State Unit.

The mayor of Viamão highlighted the importance of the test and of the Census itself. “It will allow a more assertive planning in our municipality to seek life quality and development.” Valdir Bonatto also highlighted that he should grant municipal venues to the IBGE during the Census and that he will use school structures and health basic units as venues to raise awareness in the population to answer the survey. The president of the City Council also highlighted the relevance of the work of the IBGE: “This work qualifies even more our work. It is impossible to work without the best diagnosis of our municipality,” said Igor Bernardes.

IBGE visited more than 1.2 thousand municipalities in Jardim Estalagem

The Census operational coordinator in RS, Luís Eduardo Puchalski, closed the event with a presentation of the results of the Homologation Test. The surveying pointed out that Jardim Estalagem has 3,623 residents, living in 1,277 households. Women are the majority of the inhabitants of the locality. According to the test, 1,880 are women (51.9%) and 1,743, men (48.1%). The elderly population (above 60 years) of the locality comprises 519 persons (14.3%).

The IBGE tested the mixed model of data collection in Viamão, in which residents could answer face-to-face, through telephone or through the Internet. This model will be adopted by the 2022 Census. In most households, the questionnaire was applied face-to-face (97%), whereas 2.7% answered through the Internet and 0.3%, through telephone.

 “The Census has two major goals. The first one is to count the population and, more than this, to know how that population is spread in the territory. This is key. We have just passed through the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 and we could realize the importance of knowing about the population in each part of the territory in order to properly distribute the vaccines. The second major mission of the Census is to produce a diagnosis about life quality of the population: issues like schooling, income, employment, access to basic sanitation. This diagnosis is key to assess the effectiveness of the public policies, pinpoint new needs of the population and, on top of that, design public policies,” stated Puchalski.
