The UE-RS carried out a meeting with Raquel Teixeira, state secretary of Education, last Wednesday (20). In the meeting, carried out through teleconference, she guaranteed the support to the 2022 Census. “I am a full ally and partner. The IBGE has a history of quality that should be preserved. As a secretary of Education, everything that we do depends on this information,” highlighted Teixeira, who reported to have concerned with the budget difficulties to carry out the census operation in 2021 and stressed the friendship and appreciation for sociologist Simon Schwartzman, who headed the IBGE in the 1990s.

José Renato Braga de Almeida, head of the UE-RS, highlighted the support of the Secretariat of Education to the training of the professionals who will work in the Census. “We have this hard mission. Only in Porto Alegre, 1.7 thousand people will be trained, and 12 thousand in the entire Rio Grande do Sul. We are resuming these contacts in order to jointly portray the country,” said him, reminding that the contacts with the Secretariat began back in the preparation of the Census in 2020.

Luís Eduardo Puchalski, operational coordinator of the Census in RS, and Sônia Zanotto, coordinator of dissemination of the Census in RS, were also present in the meeting. On the side of the Secretariat of Education, Guilherme Corte, general director, and Salete Albuquerque, coordinator of School Demand of Seduc, were present as well.
Puchalski suggested as a methodology of work that the IBGE meets the regional coordinations of the Secretariat and that once the demands from the IBGE in all the regions of the state are known, the IBGE agencies look for these coordinations in their areas. Raquel Teixeira informed that she meets the regional coordinations every Friday and that she will include the 2022 Census in the agenda.
Besides granting room for training, they also talked about IBGE Educa and its importance to the dissemination of the Census among the households. “If the students take the information for their homes, it is a way of ‘opening the household’, as we say,” highlighted Sônia Zanotto.
